Handicrafts

We are trying to do a Charlotte Mason style education following the advise of AmblesideOnline.org. One of the recommended subjects (along with about 15 other subjects) is handicrafts. Some suggestions are:Leather-embossing, Repousse and Woodcarving, Book-binding, Cardboard-Sloyd and  Basket-making.
We have not been this ambitious so far but after helping 7 year old E make a cardboard canoe coated with wax and painted to look like birchbark and then an indian doll to steer it I am exhausted. These projects  which required her learning two new embroidery stitches and the ins and outs of dealing with applying hot wax were well beyond the scope of the pom pom and googly eye projects we have enjoyed in years past. The results are below.
Another skill learned was perseverance under trials i.e.: poking one's thumb with a needle, frustration with the needle coming un-threaded multiple times and the thread getting tangled. There were several cries of vexation but always she kept in mind her goal to finish the project before her noon  P.E. class. She saw it through to the end. Finishing projects is not one of my strong suits so I am pleased that she made the effort to finish.

I also want to say that I have a huge stash of regular arts and crafts supplies and have them available in bins in the girls room. I call it their maker lab and E frequently gets items out to make something for her dolls to use. She just now fashioned a bow and arrows out of a rubber band, some twist ties and some tiny dowels. So I think it is valuable to keep a variety of supplies on hand.

March

Well, I didn't post this past month. For two weeks we were sick and for two weeks I didn't think of posting anything.
Before we got sick we went to the botanical gardens and loved it so much we decided to get membership for the year. We went again last Monday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves again.
Before we got sick we also took a long family walk of a trail by Hubby's work. It was a beautiful morning and we went to Whole Foods  for brunch afterwards.

We got a Wonder Box in the mail which Nanu subscribed to for us. Mark helped the girls solve the puzzles and use the cipher.

As for School this is what we  did this morning:Poetry memory work, Hymn, prayer, scripture memory, book of Acts, Story of the World by Van Loon, Spanish, picture study(Manet), E read McGuffey first reader and I read Tree in the Trail to her and she did Khan Academy Math. C did spelling sentences, cursive, map study and math.

Feb 18, 2016 school day

I Posted about some games we did recently on google plus. E and I did a phonogram game and rolling dice math game to teach place value. Right now C is playing a geography quiz game on the tablet. E is making rubberband jewelry to match a new owl t-shirt I got for her.
i keep thinking that I should post daily about what school activities we do so that I can see how much we are accomplishing.

This morning C worked on Java script computer programming, E did her reading lesson I read Much Ado About Nothing from Lambs Tales From Shakespeare. Emily retold the story.
We walked a mile to a cafe. (Physical Education.)
We did some cafe schooling next: we worked on poetry memorization. E did quick lessons for spelling, phonics, math, cursive, copy-work and a sentence making game. C did cursive, copy-work, spelling, Latin, writing about books she's read. Later I read two chapters of Tree in the Trail by Holling Clancy Holling aloud to E. C is working on learning the 50 states

The girls also practiced violin and C also practiced piano.

2016 The year of Games

I am going to try to post regularly about games we play because games are a great way to learn about many things. Today we played Rock On! for the first time. This is a hands on geology game with rock and mineral specimens, information cards and bingo like cards. This was our first time playing and we all enjoyed the game and learned some geology lingo.

Some other games we played recently were Red 7 and Category 5. Both are card games. Red 7 requires paying attention to multiple facets of the cards on your canvas and in your hand ie: color and number. Category 5 requires comparing numbers relative values so that you can play your cards in the appropriate place so as not to gain unwanted points. Mark payed this game Sunday with the girls and their friend James. Claire also played a game of chess with David at church last night.
