One of the recommended subjects (along with about 15 other subjects) is handicrafts. Some suggestions are:<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 18.4px;">Leather-embossing, Repousse and Woodcarving, Book-binding, Cardboard-Sloyd and Basket-making.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 18.4px;">We have not been this ambitious so far but after helping 7 year old E make a cardboard canoe coated with wax and painted to look like birchbark and then an indian doll to steer it I am exhausted. These projects which required her learning two new embroidery stitches and the ins and outs of dealing with applying hot wax were well beyond the scope of the pom pom and googly eye projects we have enjoyed in years past. The results are below.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 18.4px;">Another skill learned was perseverance under trials i.e.: poking one's thumb with a needle, frustration with the needle coming un-threaded multiple times and the thread getting tangled. There were several cries of vexation but always she kept in mind her goal to finish the project before her noon P.E. class. She saw it through to the end. Finishing projects is not one of my strong suits so I am pleased that she made the effort to finish.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 18.4px;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 18.4px;">I also want to say that I have a huge stash of regular arts and crafts supplies and have them available in bins in the girls room. I call it their maker lab and E frequently gets items out to make something for her dolls to use. She just now fashioned a bow and arrows out of a rubber band, some twist ties and some tiny dowels. So I think it is valuable to keep a variety of supplies on hand.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 18.4px;">

For two weeks we were sick and for two weeks I didn't think of posting anything.
Before we got sick we went to the botanical gardens and loved it so much we decided to get membership for the year. We went again last Monday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves again.
Before we got sick we also took a long family walk of a trail by Hubby's work. It was a beautiful morning and we went to Whole Foods for brunch afterwards.

We got a Wonder Box in the mail which Nanu subscribed to for us. Mark helped the girls solve the puzzles and use the cipher.

As for School this is what we did this morning:Poetry memory work, Hymn, prayer, scripture memory, book of Acts, Story of the World by Van Loon, Spanish, picture study(Manet), E read McGuffey first reader and I read Tree in the Trail to her and she did Khan Academy Math. C did spelling sentences, cursive, map study and math.
The girls also practiced violin and C also practiced piano.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-37563630980167775702016-02-02T18:53:00.003-08:002016-02-02T18:53:47.522-08:002016 The year of GamesI am going to try to post regularly about games we play because games are a great way to learn about many things. Today we played Rock On! for the first time. This is a hands on geology game with rock and mineral specimens, information cards and bingo like cards. This was our first time playing and we all enjoyed the game and learned some geology lingo.

Some other games we played recently were Red 7 and Category 5. Both are card games. Red 7 requires paying attention to multiple facets of the cards on your canvas and in your hand ie: color and number. Category 5 requires comparing numbers relative values so that you can play your cards in the appropriate place so as not to gain unwanted points. Mark payed this game Sunday with the girls and their friend James. Claire also played a game of chess with David at church last night.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-48957553240756175472015-12-14T17:57:00.003-08:002015-12-14T21:44:37.857-08:00Dec 14,2015Monday at the park/cafe/home
We did: spelling, cursive practice, math, nature study, P.E., memory work, social studies, music appreciation, history.
At the cafe we worked on memorizing parts for the creche liturgy this Sunday. The children all read scripture. The girls then wrote their spelling words as I dictated them and E wrote a spelling sentence. E did her copy work.
At the park by M's work there is a duck pond. We discovered that the ducks and coots like to eat acorns. We saw geese eating them recently so we decided to offer some to the coots and ducks. We found some that were soft enough to peel with our fingers after the recent rains. when we exhausted this supply we found a bunch more that were larger and difficult to open. We decided to try smashing them open with a rock and picking out the insides to throw to the birds. We also saw mourning doves who ate a few bits and a black bird who sang to us but wouldn't eat any acorn bits. There was also a great blue heron observing all from afar in the reeds on the other side of the pond. We talked a bit about how people prepare acorns for food and how much work it is. The girls drew four nature drawings each including coot feet, duck feet, coot beaks, coot heads and acorns.
After this they played on the playground including hill sledding on boxes with some boys who were there.
in the car we listened to classical music and to English history: Our Island Story.
We came home and C did Khan academy math working mostly on line segments and place value E did her math ordering 4 two digit numbers, writing number words 20-100 and addition with numbers 20-99. C and E practiced violin. C did copy work. We read poetry by Walter de la Mare and Tennyson.
After listening to Katy Bowmans' podcast about Outdoor School we've been trying to spend more time outside.
We collected wisteria "coins" palm bark, acorns and a broken bracelet among other treasures. The next day we discovered that the acorns had little grubs which crawled out and let us observe them. We climbed and did hanging at the playground, found a little time for some written work at the picnic tables, looked through our rock and shell collections, made music with sticks, collected some caterpillars and put them in a cup with some greens. She has wanted to avoid trying to read books in favor of reading a page or two from the McGuffey's Eclectic Primer or Reading Pathways. She has been slogging through Explode the Code Phonics and learning the 70 phonograms from the Spell to Read and Write curriculum. We play all kinds of games in order to learn sight words: we break apart poems and put them back together, She get's to erase words off the white board as she reads them aloud. She catches a beach ball with sight words all around it and reads one each time she catches it etc.
Finally today she decided to read to me. She read several pages of Dr. Seuss' Ten Apples Up On Top and then all of Old Hat New Hat and a few pages of P.D. Eastman's Are You My Mother. Interspersed with this I also read 6 books/stories to her. I think she was especially motivated since we got a box of books from a friend who is moving. Earlier today I put together a box of books that are fairly easy to read and left it in her room. At the time she was trying to read a Mo Willems book aloud to her dolls and asked me to help her. I am so glad she is taking an interest in reading.
Mental note to self: continue reading lots of fun books aloud.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-38079114577140887862015-02-03T18:54:00.000-08:002015-02-04T09:40:20.780-08:00FebruaryEnd of January: We had some very casual homeschooling recently while relatives were visiting. The girls learned how to play checkers and chess, we took field trips to the gardens at Greystone Manor in Beverly Hills, the Griffith observatory, took a hike in Griffith Park, and spent time at the California Science center. We are in the process of doing two hands on science lessons on crystals, one from sugar and one from a kit CL got at the Science center from her grandparents. Cl also learned the basics of knitting. Em did reading each day either with Nanna or me and is improving a lot. She likes both the McGuffy primer and Reading Pathways

The past two days we got back into the swing of things. Monday Cl did Khan academy math, her Spanish CD, copy work, poetry reading, a biography about Shakespeare. Em did copywork reading from Reading Pathways, listened to poetry and biography of Shakespeare. we all read a chapter from Trial and Triumph about St. Athanasius, and one about woodpeckers and flickers from Burgess Bird Book.

Today was super productive. We did Hymns, Memory work, Math, Spanish )both video/songs and Cl's CD, CL was singing along with the Calico Spanish for the first time :) we did composer study: Mozart's Magic Flute, Cl did spelling sentences and words, altogether we read poetry, Aesop's fables, listened to a Parable From Nature and a story from 50 famous stories retold (Training and Restraining and Casabianca respectively.) We finished Paddle to the Sea read some A.A. Milne poetry and William Blake. Cl read a biography of Michelangelo to herself. E, did reading pathways, singapore math and worked on counting by 2's 10's and 11's. We went on a fieldtrip to the Natural History museum and spent most of our time in the gardens. We had the pleasure of noticing a scientist (Jann) at work and she let us join her in searching for tiny snails. I was able to find half a dozen for her and she put them in specimen jars to identify in the lab she said next time we come she would show us around upstairs and we can take home some some snail shells. We also spent a little time in the nature Lab and Hall of Mammals and looked at the mystery items in the rotunda and collected some silk floss fibers.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-14188542746796282282014-12-16T15:23:00.003-08:002014-12-16T15:23:54.983-08:00Monday and TuesdayMonday both girls did spelling, races for P.E. This involved turning over cards and reading the words on the cards or if the card has a bug on it you quick slam it into the mint tin we have set aside for that purpose. Kat and E also did phonogram cards and read the first 5 pages of Reading Pathways.
all of us did two Bible stories, Jacob's Ladder and Joseph sold into slavery. We sang an advent hymn. We also read three poems from Ambleside yr 3 collection.
C did a bit of Khan academy math and E watched one K academy video on telling time.
They heard part of Charles and Mary Lambs Tales from Shakespeare Much ado about Nothing.
C Listened to some of Nesbit's Magic City. Both watched a video about lions and other predators in South Africa. E did Spanish with her doll covering the words as I said them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-87463838945975182422014-12-09T12:51:00.000-08:002014-12-09T19:29:51.616-08:00Tuesday.
We are off to a slow start with school work today. E did read three or four McGuffy lessons from the beginning of the book. I also read to her an entire book of bible stories. I read some Burgess Bird book about redwing the blackbird and some Old Man Coyote to both girls. They played in the backyard with buckets and pulleys and sand and flowers. C did khan academy math and started a new Java script program (she drew a rectangle which she filled in blue). They watched some calico Spanish videos from Kidsimmersion on Youtube. I read two Aesop's Fables and C re-told the Cat and the Mice. They listened to part of the Horse and His Boy by C.S> Lewis on CD and worked on making rubber band bracelets. C read a zoobooks magazine about camels.we read 2 chapters of Paddle to the Sea (geography) and talked about the great lakes. We played a game with link cubes in which I make a 3d structure and they copy it. I make them more and more complex. E easily copied all of them C made a mirror image of the most complex one. Is this because she is a lefty? I did another short math exercise. I set out cards with even numbers on them in no particular order and asked what they had in common. E figured it out first.
I read some more Marco Polo. E counted the books of the Bible. We did a quick game with the sight word blocks. I made a few sentences with them and Emily red them. Claire read some Child's history of the world. E shot corks and pom poms fro our catapult and discovered that the corks go further.
E went through about 1/3 of her phonogram flash cards. She needs to work on oy, oi, ew, or, oo, ew, ay.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-76409789347753333382014-12-08T12:15:00.001-08:002014-12-09T11:42:59.689-08:00Back to work MondayLast week we focused of completing handy-crafts for the CM Kids Handy-craft sale and then on getting over various sicknesses. Now we are back in business. C and I read a chapter of Marco Polo and she re-told the main vents to me. C did Khan academy math as well as a couple pages of Singapore Math. She did Spanish and practiced piano. She did copy work and a little bit of drawing.
E did five pages of Reading pathways, and copywork. All together we did advent prayers and bible readings around the advent wreath and E worked on memorizing her part for the Creche liturgy. We also sang O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Together we read A.A. Milne poems form Now we are six.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970136669946754324.post-19890309681727296612014-12-02T11:30:00.001-08:002014-12-02T18:59:45.047-08:00School TodayWe enjoyed a week of vacation and some stargazing in Arizona. At breakfast we read From a Child's History of the World about Martin Luther, King Charles V, and the quarrel between the Catholics and Protestants and church split. We also read about Henry VIII and his splitting away from Rome so he could divorce his wife.
We did Advent prayers around the wreath and the first verse of O Come, O Come Emmanuel.
C did about an hour of Khan academy Math and is now up to grade 4 with addition and subtraction through 1000. She also made progress with fractions and area and perimeter and a few other things.
C did a tiny bit more of the "Hour of Code" on Khan academy also. This is conceptually a bit tricky for an 8 yo I see why they recommend starting at age 10. C and E also observed me make a picture of the sun using Java script on Khan Academy.
Yesterday was a day off but we had an impromptu Spanish lesson and did decorating of advent wreath and made some Christmas presents and worked on tidying their room. We also did science by mixing various interesting ingredients to make bath bombs.
Emily worked on tiding the play area in the attic this morning. She also did an activity with magnets. we have a set of 16 3/4" ceramic magnets and she was experimenting with them one thing we did was wrap a couple into a ball of aluminum foil and moved it around with the stack of magnets that was left. It could make it spin around and them drew near to stick onto the stack.
The girls are currently experiencing the long awaited rain outside and enjoying their mostly unused rain boots.
They were cold when they came in and wanted a bath and to use a bath bomb we made yesterday. They had fun watching it fizz and them Emily read sight words which I wrote on craft foam shapes.
Both girls did copy work and Spanish. C's new Spanish book and CD's (Learnables Spanish Basic Structures 2) arrived the other day and she tried it out for the first time. She got through page 13!
I reviewed the first 2 lessons of Learnables book 1 with Emily. She pointed to all the pictures I talked about with ease. E and I did Khan academy and seemed to enjoy it, She sat on my lap did the mouse at first but she switched to doing it herself about halfway through.

We read several Bible stories and added ornaments to the Jesse tree in the girls room. They made the ornaments out of salt dough a couple years ago.

E read lessons 5, 9 and 10 of the McGuffey's Primer aloud to me while sitting on my lap. She read the first two very fluently.

At afternoon tea we read a couple Spanish poems and I translated them. I also read some A.A. Milne poems and two chapters of Paddle to the sea we looked at the map and saw where Lake Huron is located. I read two Aesops fables: The Lion and the Goat which E retold and the Fox and the Goat which C retold.
C spent time reading Farmer's Boy, practicing piano, talking to her Nanna, reading Nancy Drew and Flower Fairies of the Trees by Cicely Mary Barker.
It was a full day!
Read a chapter of Paddle to the Sea
did sight word games
balance games with new dome cones
Khan academy Math
Spanish CD and poem
read poems by A.A. Milne
worked on memorizing Furry Bear by A.A Milne
did measuring with link cubes
did estimation
read two Aesop's Fables and retold one
read some of Marco Polo's Travels

Word game: I write sight words or a poem or rhyme we've been working on on the white board and say a work to my child, she gets to find it and erase it. We did words from the dolch sight word list then words from Jam on Toast poem by Gareth Owen and then from "there was an old woman who lived in a shoe."

Word game from yesterday:
I printed out words from Hop on pop onto card stock and cut them out and folded the cards in 1/4. I put them in a pop corn bowl and we took turns taking out a word and reading it. I added in a bunch of extra cards that say "pop" each time someone pulls out "pop" they get to throw it up in the air and shout "POP!" You keep the words you are able to read and put back any you can't read.

Spanish game:
We have the Learnables curriculum but my 6 yo doesn't like listening to the CD that goes with it. Today I looked at the pictures in the book with her and named the items out of order. She had to search for them and cover each of them with a link cube as I called it out. We got through several pages this way and she said she was interested in learning something new so I said words on the new page and covered them as I said them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11677862835956509300noreply@blogger.com1
